Option 1: Start your own online ESL business and teach independently.įor some people, teaching English independently may just not be feasible or desirable, at least for now. Some of us love working with kids but don’t have the money or time to get state certified when we just lost our jobs. You may decide that the most prudent option at this point is to return to the classroom this year.īut the problem for many of us is that once you’ve had a taste of working remotely with no boss, no commute, no meetings, and no fixed schedule, it’s hard to go back. Many online English teachers are or were brick and mortar classroom teachers. You may look at the pay for online ESL companies based outside of China and just think… nah. With such an abrupt shift in the remote teaching landscape, you may not have time to build your own business or retrain in another field. Collectively, we worked in a wide range of professions before turning to online ESL, and many may decide to revisit their previous careers, at least temporarily. Of course, online English teachers come from all walks of life. So let’s break down our options going forward, once you’ve had a chance to sleep in (silver linings, my friends) and take some deep breaths. For some people this was merely a side hustle, but others were earning a full-time income. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially if your income just dried up quite literally overnight. ![]()
